Types Of Cheap Razor Blades

By Deborah Anderson

A razor is a bladed tool that people use to shave hair from various parts of the body. There is evidence indicating that razors were in existence before the Bronze Age. Obsidian and bronze were the major materials used to make these tools in most ancient worlds. They were oval-shaped with tangs protruding from the short end. The ordinary razors in use today were invented in the eighteenth century, with electric models coming up in the 1960s.

Technology has evolved how these products are made. The market today has a huge variety of cheap razor blades to choose from. Straight razors, disposable razors, and electric razors are examples of razors on the market. Each variety was invented at a different time.

In years before the 20th century, straight razors were the commonest kinds of razors in existence. They are also called cut-throats. They are made of handles, which have one sharpened edge. Two major kinds of materials are used to make them, that is, carbon steel and stainless steel. Stainless steel strops and hones slowly and holds edges longer. On the contrary, carbon steel have less durable edges and they strop and hone faster.

Producers still make both stainless steel and carbon steel blades. However, stainless steel blades are harder to find. These razors rotate between two protective scales on a pin. The scales exist to protect the blade from damage and the skin from cuts when the device is folded. Handle scales are made from various materials, including celluloid, plastic, bone, mother-of-pearl, and wood. Ivory was once in use, but its use was stopped.

Disposable blade straight razors look like straight razors and are used in the same way. The main difference is that razors are disposed after use. They may be designed to use a single-edged blade or double-edged blade. These varieties do not require honing or stropping. The razors are prone to wearing out fast. The useful life of blades can be prolonged by providing proper care such as cleaning and drying well when not in use.

Safety razors protect the skin from all parts of the tool, except the edge. It was invented by a Frenchman named Jean-Jacques Perret in 1762. The design resembles straight razors only that the blade has wooden sleeves surrounding it. Modern varieties have safety bars included to protect the skin from cuts. Two main types of safety razors exist, that is, double-edged and single-edged.

Electric razors also go by the name electric dry shavers. These models have an integral oscillating or rotating blade. They run on tiny DC motors, which derive their power from either batteries or electrical energy from the mains. Water, shaving cream, and soap are not necessary when using these devices.

Other models of electric razors use rechargeable batteries. Another option besides rechargeable batteries is electro-mechanical oscillators which are driven by AC-energized solenoids. The initial electric razors used to be powered by hand. One had to pull a cord which drove a flywheel.
