Elderly Walkers Make Your Life Easier

By Kay William

If your ability for moving around your home without help is significantly decreased, due to your ages or some other health problem, or you have difficulties balancing, you might consider trying elderly walkers. They can really improve your life making you feel more secure and confident about yourself. You can choose among three different types of walkers. The most stable one is the standard type, the one without wheels. You need to lift it up and place in front of you to be able to walk around.

A two-wheel walker allows you to place your weight on it as well, but you don't need to lift it up while walking. It can be easily pushed around, and those two legs without wheels provide stability and prevent the chance of rolling. A four-wheel type is made for people who don't have so much troubles balancing, but they need some help walking. It will allow them to move faster and provide additional safety.

There are several types of grips available to choose from. Plastic grips are the most common choice, and they come in various sizes. Soft or foam made grip covers could be better solution for people whose hands tend to get sweaty. If you have troubles grasping, thanks to different joint problems or maybe arthritis, larger grips will improve your safety.

You should carefully adjust your walker, to make sure it suits your needs perfectly. The height is very important, because it will affect your body position. If it is set too low, you will be forced to lean over it, and your back will suffer. If it is set too high, it won't provide enough stability. Generally, when you step into it, your elbows should be bent just a little bit, maybe fifteen degrees.

Stay upright as you move. Push or move the walker in front of you, and then step into it, one leg at a time. Don't push it too far away from you and never try to use it to climb stairs. If you lean over it, it might cause you some back pains, so try to stay upright from the very beginning. Make sure to change directions slowly.

There is also a possibility of attaching different accessories on your walker. Side pouch is very convenient for placing your books or papers in it, and light plastic trays and baskets can be attached in front, allowing you to carry your food or other things. The seat can also be there, and you might find it very handy to have it.

Maintenance is very important, and you should check the state of your equipment regularly. Worn out parts and loose wheels can increase your chances of falling, and you should prevent that from happening. Make sure the rubber shoe-stop bases or heels are always in a good condition, as well as the grips.

Elderly walkers will give you a great chance to be independent once again. Whether your problems are associated with your health condition or your age, it will be nice to feel free, and to move around without needing help from others. Simple, light-weight walker can really make your life much better.
