By Angel Dudley

Generally speaking a chronic illness is one that will normally last three months or longer. It may surprise you that 7 out of every 10 deaths in the US is from chronic related diseases. With the rise in health care costs, there is a growing trend for people to follow a more family oriented chronic care strategy at their own home for their family and loved ones.

There are no stead-fast rules that apply for these family care situations. However, there are some ideas that someone could try following to help make things better long term situations. One reason more people are pursuing these ideas is they wish to remain near their family and understand that even a family member who has a medical issue still may have something to offer their family.

One of the most important things that can be done is to keep communication as open as possible. It is vital that they realize you are there to help them. Let them know that they can talk to you about any concerns they have. Often these illnesses can cause memory loss or extreme personality changes, be patient and work through this.

If they are still regularly seeing a doctor take an active part in any appointments. No one enjoys going to a doctor's office alone, family members possessing long term illnesses are no exception. By being more active you could take them back and forth as well as fill any prescriptions they need and remember critical items they need to take. You could also remember information that they may not remember. Following the visit you can always help set up their next appointments so they do not miss it.

Most of the people that have long term illnesses will typically require some form of treatment with assorted medicines and pills. It is vital to become knowledgeable about these items to maintain the safety of your loved ones. Take the time to understand what they do and if there are any possible drug or food interactions.

As boring as it sounds go back to college. Many colleges have classes that are specifically targeted for people who will be taking care of their family members while at home. You often learn CPR, first aid and how to dress or bathe somebody. The classes are typically not long and worth every nickel they cost.

Try to encourage them to write in a journal about what is happening and how they feel. This may seem silly at first but could really help fine tune any medical treatment or help pin-point areas of treatment the doctor is missing. It does not have to be elaborate, just a simple journal that they can take a few moments to write in each day.

You are there to help solve their problems not create new ones for them. Many times it will take a while to regain a loved ones trust but it is important if you plan to help them with long term chronic care. It will be tough, but do not give up.
