The Magical Little Capsule Liposome

By Gabrielle Lambert

Liposome is designed to deliver drugs very effectively. It is made as an artificial cell, and it is useful in medicine in many different ways. There are three basic types of liposomes; MLV means multilamillar vesicle, and SUV and LUV are unilamellar vesicles, small and large ones. They have very specific spherical shape and high drug delivery efficacy. They can be designed for oral use, or in form of lotions, creams or patches. You can also inhale them in form of dry spray or nasal spray, or take them intravenously.

They can also be used in agriculture, for example. Liposomes are used as carriers for the delivery of enzymes and other nutritional supplements to foods, for example. Their usage in cosmetology is highly beneficial, because they have very high biocompatibility. They are made from the same or very similar material as the real cells. Thanks to that, different side effects are reduced, and the diffusion of active ingredients greatly improved.

It is really a tiny bubble with the membrane composed from the same, or very similar elements the cell is composed from, called phospholipids. Thanks to that, they can safely deliver their contents on the targeting area. It is very useful in cancer treatments, for example. Those little capsules can target the tumor, penetrate through its membrane and safely deliver the drug, without causing damage to surrounded tissue.

In addition, they are capable to carry large pieces of DNA as well. In other forms of transfer, DNA gets damaged through various degrading processes, but this way it is protected from them. Capsules may have bi layered membranes, and they can carry positively, but also negatively charged molecules. Additionally, they can be both hydrophilic and lipophilic, or to have only one of those characteristics.

Some drugs would be more effective if carried to targeted area this way. Traditional oral capsules and pills can have problems with gastric system, and acid might destroy them partially. There are also different issues with hydrolysis and solubility. Using this type of drug carriers will significantly improve the effectiveness of different drugs and prolong the circulation time.

Recently, liposomes became very interesting for the specific oral delivery of different nutritional supplements. The majority of dietary and nutritional supplements in form of pills and capsules have very low level of absorption. Furthermore, traditional oral tablets are partially destroyed by the gastric system, losing their effectiveness.

Dietary and nutritional supplements can be carried within these small capsules to all targeting areas. Both lipophilic and hydrophilic nutritive supplements are effectively protected within those bubbles, and gastric system cannot harm them. Capsules ensure very high level of drug absorbtion, making those nutrients much more effective.

Nano liposome is especially small variation of the same technology. Their effects are even more impressive, although there are several factors that can affect the final quality of absorption. The quality of used raw material is crucial, as well as the method of manufacturing, size and actual stability of capsules used for each particular purpose. They are the key elements for their effectiveness.
