Learn Why Simple and Special Tongue Exercises are Becoming an Alternative Sleep Apnea Treatment

By Michael Larkin

Can simple tongue exercises really help treat obstructive sleep apnea? Yes, studies have shown that they do help treat it if done correctly. OSA is the blockage of the airway by the tongue and tissues of the mouth falling into the back of the throat while you sleep.

The tongue and tissues fall because they become overly relaxed with sleep apnea cases. The tongue does naturally relax while sleeping, but sleep apnea cases it relaxes way too much and that is where these simple exercises help.

These special tongue exercises help strengthen the tongue up enough so when it relaxes at night it doesn't fall back and block the airway.

It is important that you follow these exercises consistently and correctly to get the full benefit. If they are done correctly, studies have shown for them to work. There are other sleep apnea exercises that are designed by using the throat and jaw that are effective as well.

You can start by doing these sleep apnea tongue exercises.

1.) Press a spoon with a tongue against the top of the mouth for an extended period of time until it gets fatigued. Do this twice daily.

2.) Hold spoon against the top of your mouth just behind your top front teeth with your tongue. Keep this position for as long as you can and repeat two times a day.

3.) Gently clinch your tongue between your front teeth. Hold your tongue there and swallow five times. Repeat this exercise three times a day.

4.) Hold your tongue against the roof of your mouth directly behind the top front teeth. Do this for minutes a day.

5.) Hold your tongue between your teeth, clamp down gently and swallow five times. Repeat three times a day.

Practice makes permanent in anything. Just like exercising to stay in shape or lose weight, these exercises must be done correctly and consistently over time to become effective. Keep practicing these tongue exercises for sleep apnea and see if they work for you.
