Importance Of Counseling Before Marriage

By Jeannie Chapman

In most places marriage is considered a rite of passage. This is why it is advisable to get into it knowing everything there is to know about this institution. Since marriage is a long time investment and not many people are experienced, except people who have been in previous marriages, it is recommendable to seek counseling. This gives you a rough idea on what to expect from your partner and how to live harmoniously. This also gives the couple several ways of solving conflicts or misunderstandings in an amicable way.

There are several types of counseling and counselors for different stages of every relationship. Premarital counseling is meant for couples that are looking forward to tying the knot. Though it is not mandatory for couples to attend this program, it is greatly recommended. In cases where the couples have different religious beliefs, the counselors come in handy in offering sound advice on how to respect the beliefs of your partner while still maintain the spark in the marriage.

Two very young people who have decided to get married may not know the challenges of marriage. A counselor is able to take them through what to expect when they are married and their duties to ensure they are well informed and prepared for the lifelong commitment. There are special cases of couples or one partner who has had an abusive past. A counselor is able to help them get over past emotions and be able to trust and rely on each other.

There are cases of couples who have special life circumstances like long distance relationships, psychological disorders and medical concerns. It may be difficult to come to terms with these situations when married and be able to stay committed but with the help of a counselor couples understand the need to hold on and stay happy no matter how they may feel. Other special cases that have to seek psychoanalysis include people with drug abuse problems, self-esteem issues among others.

There are different types of psychoanalysis available for engaged couples. The first type is premarital psychoanalysis which can be recommended by law or the faith of the couples. The law requires couples to be counseled on family planning, finances, communication, legal requirements of marriage among others. The faith-based psychoanalysis revolves around matters concerning the role of religion in marriage, how they are to relate to each other and God and the contribution of church in the growth of their marriage.

The other type of psychoanalysis is therapy psychoanalysis. This deals in topics like substance abuse or a case where a partner could be having a certain bad behavior that they feel hard to let go. This type also covers emotional stress emanating from the past abuse. The counselor helps the couple solve these problems including medical concerns.

Specialized psychoanalysis covers a wide range of topics like finances which handles every topic about money that may arise in marriage. Parenting is under this category and it guides couples on what to expect when they decide to start bearing children and raising them. Career counseling deals with matters concerning career path and how to work together to ensure each partner is fulfilled in their career and the relationship. Family counseling is concerned with couples who already have kids from past relationships.

Engaged couples can seek help from churches or offices licensed to officiate marriage on how to get counseling. They are required to attend a number of specified sessions to finish their program. The most important thing is that at the end of the sessions they are well equipped to start the journey of marriage with a common goal.
