The terminology is derive from Latin words that mean to hear and to measure, which is why the term is described as the measure of hearing ability. This science is primarily concerned with the ability to hear at specified levels but is also involved with tracking capability of distinguishing between pitches and intensities of sounds. These units measure Otoacoustic emissions and acoustic reflex. Test results help doctors diagnose loss as well as other related conditions.

Meters are available for sale at several retailers. The prices of units will depend on the type. Models that are more complex usually offer better results. They are also expensive and typically only found at professional offices. There are versions that are easy to use at home and inexpensive to buy.

Hearing loss may be the result of many different things. This terminology refers to the partial or total loss of the ability to hear.
